It sounds absurd: you're the only seller of your product – and yet, instead of the "Add to Basket" button, Amazon only shows "See all offers". Without the Buybox, sales collapse immediately, because hardly any customer clicks through the offer list. Why does this happen, and what can you do?
Amazon only awards the Buybox to offers that meet certain quality criteria – even when there's no competition. If your offer doesn't currently meet the criteria, the Buybox is simply suppressed. The most common triggers: a price that Amazon judges too high compared to other shops or your own price history, performance problems in your seller account, or logistical deterioration such as longer delivery times.
Amazon compares your price not only with other Amazon sellers, but also with external shops and your own price trend. If you raise the price significantly – for example after a discount promotion – the Buybox can disappear until the price is back within the expected range. So keep a particularly close eye on your Buybox rate after price changes.
Your seller performance affects the Buybox directly: order defect rate, late deliveries, cancellation rate and seller feedback from the last 30 to 90 days. Sellers with few reviews are hit especially hard by a single negative review. So actively build up seller feedback – for example via the "Request a Review" function – and respond professionally to negative reviews. Legitimate cases (e.g. reviews about shipping problems with FBA) can be removed by Amazon on request.
FBA tip: reviews relating to shipping or delivery by Amazon are struck through on request – they then no longer count against your seller performance.
The Buybox isn't down to chance and isn't a reward for loyalty, but the result of an assessment. Amazon essentially checks four areas: price including shipping, shipping speed and reliability, seller performance and availability. An offer must reach a minimum quality in all four areas – otherwise the Buybox is suppressed, even without competition.
When several sellers sell the same ASIN, a race to undercut quickly develops. Anyone who only reacts to the cheapest price eventually ends up below their own margin – and still doesn't win long-term, because the next seller undercuts again.
The better way: set a price floor that protects your margin, and win the Buybox through the other factors – faster shipping, better seller performance, reliable availability. A repricer helps with this, but must work within clear limits.
Our own AI Sellercore continuously monitors your Buybox share and alerts you when it drops – so the cause can be found before sales noticeably suffer.
A common reason for a sudden loss of the Buybox is hijackers: third parties who latch onto your listing with usually cheaper – often counterfeit – items. You then not only lose sales, but also risk negative reviews for someone else's goods.
The Buybox share is available per ASIN in Seller Central. A value below 90% when you're the only seller is a warning sign – something isn't right. We check this value weekly for the clients we manage, because it often reveals problems earlier than sales themselves.
